AMMAN, Sept. 14 — Eleven people suffered suffocation Monday following an ammonia gas leak at an industrial complex in Jordan’s southern port city of Aqaba, according to Nedal Musa Al Ouran, commissioner for environment and public safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.
The incident occurred around noon during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure device belonging to a Japanese company. A small amount of ammonia previously accumulated at the site leaked during the work.
The injuries ranged from mild to moderate suffocation. Some affected workers received treatment at the complex clinic, while others were transferred to hospital, Ouran said.
Workers had initially followed safety procedures, but their proximity to the leak exposed them to the gas.
The leak was brought under control shortly afterward, with civil defense personnel and security forces at the site. Workers were evacuated as a precaution under emergency plans.
They will return after further inspections and measurements confirm no remaining risks.
Authorities will review safety measures during the incident to identify shortcomings and improve future emergency procedures.
