Cairo, September 18 (QNA) – The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States welcomed the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) adoption, by a broad majority of 152 countries, of a resolution regarding the State of Palestine’s participation in the proceedings of its 81st session; A resolution that enables President Mahmoud Abbas to deliver his address before the UNGA via a pre-recorded video.
This move follows the US decision to prevent President Mahmoud Abbas and members of the Palestinian delegation from participating in person in UN meetings in New York.
In a statement issued today, the General Secretariat of the Arab League deemed the vote a reflection of a broad international stance rejecting the denial of the State of Palestine’s right to convey its voice and positions to the international community. It also underscored the importance of ensuring the State of Palestine’s participation in the work of the UN and international forums.
The statement commended the countries that sponsored and voted in favor of the resolution, emphasizing the importance of the United States, as the host country, adhering to its obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement.
It noted that the Palestinian voice would remain present at the UN podium and that the broad international support for the resolution reflects the international community’s commitment to the presence of the State of Palestine and its cause within the work of the international organization.
The UNGA adopted the resolution yesterday with 152 votes in favor, three against, and four abstentions, while expressing regret over the US refusal to grant visas to representatives of the State of Palestine.
