MIRPUR (AJK), October 4: Member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Sehrish Qamar has said that the recently passed resolutions by the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) Assembly seeking restoration of the region’s statehood and special status reflect the long-standing aspirations and demands of the Kashmiri people.
In a statement issued here, she said the people of Kashmir were not prepared to compromise on their identity, distinct status and political rights. She said India’s unilateral decision on August 5, 2019 to revoke IIOJK’s special status had created deep uncertainty, insecurity and a sense of deprivation among the Kashmiri people.
Sehrish Qamar said the elected assembly’s demand for restoration of the region’s status clearly demonstrated that the Kashmiri people wanted to participate in decisions concerning their future.
“Jammu and Kashmir stands as a disputed territory and the Kashmir dispute continues to remain on the agenda of the United Nations,” she said.
She said the relevant UN Security Council resolutions guaranteed the Kashmiri people the right to determine their future through a free and impartial plebiscite. India’s unilateral actions could not alter the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir, she maintained.
The AJK legislator said the right to self-determination was a fundamental human, legal and moral right recognised by international law. Sustainable peace in the region could not be achieved by ignoring the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
She called upon the international community and human rights organisations to take notice of the human rights situation in IIOJK and play their role in ensuring a just and lasting settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
She said AJK’s political leadership and people stood by their Kashmiri brethren and would continue supporting their peaceful political struggle for their fundamental rights.
