Australian engineer Arnold Dix, who has been assisting Nepalese authorities remotely with underground search operations, said rescuers were struggling to locate tunnels after the area was devastated.
“The actual signature of them has gone – everything is just missing. It looks like a lunar landscape,” Dix told BBC Radio 4’s World at One.
Dix said rescuers first needed to establish the locations of power stations before deciding how best to reach them. Accessing the underground structures typically involves digging through debris and blasting boulders.
He described the operation as extraordinary, saying some boulders were larger than houses and unlike anything he had encountered during his career.
Dix, a former head of the International Tunnelling Association, said the scale and condition of the affected area had made the search particularly difficult.
His comments highlighted the challenges facing rescuers as they work to identify and access underground structures amid extensive destruction.
Authorities continue efforts to locate the tunnels and determine safe routes to reach key underground facilities. The search operation remains complex because much of the area has been transformed by debris and large rocks, and severely damaged underground infrastructure.
