Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro held their final campaign rallies Saturday ahead of Sunday’s presidential runoff, as a new poll showed a closely contested race.
According to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, the latest poll put Bolsonaro at 50.7% support and Lula at 49.3%, indicating a narrow gap between the candidates before voting begins.
Lula’s supporters gathered in Sao Paulo around noon for his final campaign event. He was expected to arrive after 4 pm local time, following a rally in Rio de Janeiro.
Meanwhile, Bolsonaro campaigned in Rio’s Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, seeking to strengthen support ahead of the decisive vote.
The runoff pits Lula, who returned to office in 2023 and is seeking another term, against Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The election is drawing close attention across Latin America because of Brazil’s regional influence and its position as the continent’s largest economy.
The outcome will determine the country’s next president following a tightly contested campaign.
