BRASILIA, Sept. 18 — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Thursday he will warn US President Donald Trump against interfering in Brazil’s election at the UN General Assembly.
Lula said Brazil wants to remain sovereign and have its future decided by its citizens. He criticized opposition Senator Flavio Bolsonaro’s ties with Washington.
Lula is scheduled to deliver the opening address at the UN General Assembly Tuesday, followed by Trump. The two leaders are expected to cross paths, although no bilateral meeting has been scheduled.
Brazilian Foreign Ministry official Carlos Bicalho Cozendey said the presidents are expected to meet, as they did last year.
Relations between Brasilia and Washington have strained over trade disputes and tariff pressures. Trump has expressed support for former President Jair Bolsonaro and his eldest son, Flavio.
An AtlasIntel/Bloomberg survey released Thursday showed Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro in a statistical deadlock ahead of an Oct. 25 runoff.
Brazil’s election is scheduled for Oct. 4. If no candidate receives more than 50% of valid votes, the top two candidates will proceed to a second round.
