BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul that China and the European Union should avoid a trade war and strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation.
During a phone call, Wang said China and the EU are comprehensive strategic partners and should resolve their concerns through dialogue and consultation.
Wang urged Germany to maintain a rational and pragmatic approach and play a constructive role within the EU. He also called on Berlin to support free trade and oppose protectionist measures.
The German Foreign Ministry said both sides agreed that a stable global economy serves the interests of China, Germany and Europe.
It said trade relations should be based on fair rules and a level playing field.
The discussions also covered Iran, Ukraine and Taiwan. Wang urged Germany to take concrete steps to safeguard Chinese-German relations and help maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, saying this would create conditions for high-level bilateral exchanges.
