China has called for stronger cooperation with Iceland in trade, geothermal energy, green transition and Arctic affairs as the countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a meeting with his Icelandic counterpart, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, in Beijing on Thursday, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
Wang said China was willing to share development opportunities with Iceland and explore cooperation in trade, economy, geothermal energy, marine affairs and the Arctic.
He called for greater exchanges in tourism, joint scientific research, talent development and people-to-people contacts.
Wang urged both countries to strengthen cooperation, uphold multilateralism and international law, and support the United Nations’ central role in international affairs to promote global peace and stability.
Gunnarsdottir is visiting China until Saturday and will lead an Icelandic business delegation to a seafood expo in Qingdao, Shandong province.
China and Iceland established diplomatic relations in 1971. China is Iceland’s largest trading partner in Asia. Their free trade agreement, signed in April 2013, took effect in July 2014.
