China said Friday that asking Beijing to participate in nuclear disarmament negotiations was “neither fair nor reasonable,” following US President Donald Trump’s remarks that Washington was consulting China and Russia on denuclearization.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China’s nuclear arsenal was significantly smaller than those of the United States and Russia, according to the state-run Global Times.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China possessed an estimated 620 nuclear warheads as of January 2026, compared with 5,042 held by the United States and 5,420 by Russia.
Mao said Beijing had repeatedly stated its position on the issue.
She argued that the United States, as the country possessing a much larger nuclear arsenal, should fulfil its special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament.
Mao described this responsibility as a broad consensus within the international community, emphasizing Washington’s leading role in global nuclear arms reduction efforts.
