WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 (AP) – Democrats have won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, changing the balance of power in Washington.
Democrats secured 54 seats in the Senate, exceeding the 51 seats required for a majority. They also won 224 seats in the House of Representatives, surpassing the 218 seats needed to control the chamber.
The results represent a major setback for Republicans and President Donald Trump, whose party previously held majorities in both chambers.
The Democratic victories will give the party greater influence over legislation, congressional oversight and investigations during the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.
