Dictionary.com has named “maxxing” its 2026 Word of the Year, highlighting the growing influence of internet slang on mainstream culture.
Derived from “maximizing,” the term describes efforts to optimize something to the fullest. Popular among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, it is used across different aspects of life, including fitness, health, sleep and artificial intelligence.
Examples include “gymmaxxing” for optimizing workouts, “healthmaxxing” for improving health practices and “sleepmaxxing” for maximizing sleep quality.
Steve Johnson, director of lexicography at Dictionary Media Group, which operates Dictionary.com, said the term stood out because it appeared widely across articles and different fields.
The dictionary said its selection followed an analysis of search data, social media trends, news coverage and cultural significance.
Other finalists included “affordability,” reflecting concerns over rising living costs; “data center,” linked to expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure; “unc,” a slang term for an older person considered out of touch; and “odyssey,” referring to a long and eventful journey.
The selection follows “67,” Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year, a viral expression often used without a clear meaning.
