Doha, September 23 (QNA) — The annual sessions of the United Nations General Assembly hold special significance as member states discuss critical global issues and adopt decisions and recommendations concerning international peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and other matters of mutual interest.
HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has consistently attended the annual UNGA sessions, using his speeches to reaffirm Qatar’s principled positions, commitment to international peace and security, sustainable development, international cooperation and efforts to address global challenges.
HH the Amir’s speech at the opening session of the 81st UNGA in New York addressed major international and regional challenges and presented Qatar’s vision for solutions based on dialogue, political and diplomatic means and the principles of the UN Charter.
In exclusive statements to QNA, newspaper editors-in-chief and political analysts said the speech reflected Qatar’s positions and regional approach. They highlighted HH the Amir’s warning that time does not resolve lingering conflicts without just settlements but increases their costs, with current crises resulting from years of postponement, temporary solutions and unrealistic policies.
Editor-in-Chief of Al-Raya newspaper Taleb Al Marri said the speech reflected a Qatari approach combining protection of national sovereignty with openness to dialogue and peaceful solutions.
He said resilience results from planning, preparedness and investment in people and national capabilities, as well as assessing risks, securing supply chains, strengthening national institutions, developing strategic reserves and building trusted international partnerships.
Al Marri noted that Qatar, through its role as a trusted mediator and facilitator of peace, has consistently warned that unresolved conflicts become more costly without just settlements.
He said the speech called for addressing regional crises through dialogue, negotiation and respect for the interests of countries. HH the Amir also linked the regional situation to the absence of a collective security system respecting sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and supporting peaceful settlement of disputes.
Regarding the Gulf crisis, Al Marri highlighted HH the Amir’s call for diplomatic means, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation and returning to negotiations. He said the message emphasized that Gulf security requires collective arrangements protecting regional interests and creating opportunities for cooperation and development.
Al Marri also stressed the continued importance of the Palestinian cause in Qatar’s foreign policy. He noted HH the Amir’s description of the situation in Gaza as genocide and his call for international action to stop the catastrophe and protect civilians.
The speech reaffirmed Qatar’s mediation efforts toward a ceasefire, lasting peace, withdrawal, lifting the blockade and facilitating humanitarian aid, alongside support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with international references.
On Qatar-UN relations, Al Marri said the partnership provides an important framework for cooperation in peace, development, humanitarian action and human rights. He noted that Qatar’s hosting of international initiatives and expansion of the United Nations House in Doha reflect the longstanding partnership.
Editor-in-Chief of Al Sharq newspaper Jaber Salem Al Harami said HH the Amir’s participation in the UNGA was particularly important given numerous global and regional crises. He said His Highness’s speeches address major issues including security tensions, supply chains, energy security and waterways.
Al Harami emphasized that Qatar is an active player at the United Nations and supports dialogue, international law and the principles of the international organization.
Editor-in-Chief of Al Watan newspaper Mohammed Haji said HH the Amir’s speech presented a roadmap for overcoming regional and international crises while reaffirming Qatar’s principles of protecting sovereignty and national interests.
He highlighted the speech’s political and strategic dimensions, particularly its emphasis on international cooperation and multilateral action in addressing challenges through sustainable rather than temporary solutions.
Haji also pointed to the Strait of Hormuz and its importance for supply chains, energy security and maritime routes. He said the speech addressed Arab concerns, particularly Gaza and the rights of the Palestinian people.
Director General of the Qatar Press Center Sadiq Mohammed Al Emari said HH the Amir clearly presented Qatar’s position on regional and international crises and ways to address them sustainably through dialogue and diplomacy.
He stressed that temporary solutions cannot produce satisfactory outcomes and said the Strait of Hormuz is an international concern because any threat to its closure could affect oil and gas exports, food supply chains, fertilizers, petrochemicals and raw materials used in manufacturing electronic chips.
Al Emari also highlighted Qatar’s position on Palestinian rights and said the speech addressed the suffering of peoples in several Arab countries, including Sudan and Yemen, while calling for greater attention to and support for Syria.
Assistant Professor of Political Science at Qatar University Dr. Nafja Sabbah Al Kuwari said Qatar’s participation in successive UNGA sessions strengthens its international presence and relations with various partners.
She said HH the Amir’s participation came at a turbulent time and that his proposals seek understandings and common ground among conflicting parties, while focusing on development, peace, partnerships and national principles.
Dr. Al Kuwari noted that the UNGA is not merely a platform for speeches but also an arena for diplomatic engagement and strengthening international partnerships.
Senior Researcher at Al Jazeera Center for Studies Dr. Liqaa Maki said HH the Amir’s speech clearly presented Qatar’s position on regional issues, particularly the Palestinian cause and Gaza.
She said Qatar combines support for Palestinian rights with mediation efforts aimed at ending the war in Gaza and highlighted Doha’s mediation role.
Dr. Maki also said the speech addressed the US-Iranian war, the need for de-escalation, equal rights, international navigation, respect for international law and peaceful solutions.
