LAHORE (Special Correspondent): Political and social leaders Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza and Muhammad Naushad Khan have said that the rising poverty rate and inflation in Pakistan have made life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens. According to World Bank statistics, approximately 23 percent of Pakistan’s population was living on less than three dollars a day in purchasing power terms in 2024, a matter of serious concern for the government and policymakers.
In a joint statement, they said that the government has a responsibility to formulate comprehensive and effective strategies to eradicate poverty and ensure the provision of basic necessities to the public. Fluctuations in petroleum prices, high electricity and gas bills, and rising food prices have made it increasingly difficult for salaried employees, labourers, and low-income families to meet their household expenses.
They said that creating new employment opportunities, supporting small businesses, promoting technical and vocational education, and providing transparent financial assistance to deserving families are essential to reducing poverty.
They emphasized that the government should set clear targets for poverty reduction and present an annual progress report to the public. They stressed that economic growth can only be considered a genuine success when its benefits reach ordinary citizens and every family is able to live with dignity.
