CAIRO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi discussed regional developments and efforts to ease tensions during a phone call on Tuesday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of reducing tensions amid growing regional concerns.
The call followed a meeting in Tehran on Monday involving senior officials from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye. They agreed to continue discussions to strengthen regional peace and security.
Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s full support for efforts to contain tensions and prevent a wider crisis.
The ministers also discussed consultations involving Iran and the regional four-country ministerial mechanism, comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye.
The talks came amid concerns about possible US military action against Iran. US President Donald Trump on Friday raised the possibility of further strikes, referring to the military operation launched against Iran on Feb. 28 alongside an Israeli offensive.
The call also followed Egypt’s parliament decision on Monday to authorize President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to take necessary measures to support and defend Saudi Arabia against external attacks. The decision came amid escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi group.
