Estonia plans to build around 150 bunkers in the northeastern Ida-Virumaa region bordering Russia to strengthen its defenses, Defense Minister Martin Herem said Wednesday.
Estonian public broadcaster ERR reported that around 100 bunkers will be built on state-owned land and 50 on private or municipal land.
Herem provided no further details about the bunkers or their intended use.
The plan comes as Baltic states strengthen defenses and civilian preparedness amid security concerns. NATO officials have warned of Russian drone incursions, airspace violations, sabotage and other hybrid threats.
European countries are also reinforcing air defenses.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO has strengthened its eastern flank by deploying additional troops and preparing a rapid-response plan.
Earlier this month, Estonia’s military announced plans to relocate a combat-ready brigade closer to Russia.
The 1st Brigade is expected to move to an expanded military base less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the border, improving Estonia’s ability to respond to a potential Russian attack.
