WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 — Federal investigators searched the Washington, D.C., home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar early Monday, in a high-profile investigation involving immigration as U.S. midterm elections approach.
Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs. Born in Somalia, she arrived in the United States in the 1990s after spending four years with her family in a refugee camp in Kenya.
CBS News reported that the investigation reportedly concerns her immigration paperwork. NBC News said the search was linked to a longstanding criminal investigation involving Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. attorney in Minneapolis and the Department of Justice, citing a source familiar with the matter.
Omar, who is seeking re-election, described the operation as targeted and accused the federal government of using law enforcement to intimidate political opponents.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, she said she would not be silenced.
The search occurred about three weeks before the midterm elections, adding to the political attention surrounding immigration enforcement.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar over her political positions. Omar was the first African refugee elected to Congress and one of the first two Muslim-American women to serve in the House of Representatives.
