PARIS — September 6, 2026: FIFA President Gianni Infantino will seek re-election next year despite growing opposition over his abandoned plan to bring private investment into FIFA competitions, the football governing body confirmed Sunday.
A FIFA spokesperson said Infantino, who announced his intention to seek re-election in April, remained committed to contesting the 2027 election.
The 56-year-old Swiss is seeking a fourth and final term that would keep him as FIFA president until 2031 if successful.
Infantino has faced criticism since FIFA’s now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise plan proposed allowing private investment in future FIFA events, including World Cups.
UEFA has called for him to step down and has pursued legal action seeking documents related to the plan. The Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have also joined criticism of his leadership.
Infantino has retained support from the African football governing body CAF and South American confederation CONMEBOL.
CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani is viewed as a possible challenger, although no rival candidate has formally declared a bid so far.
The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Candidate nominations must be submitted by November 18.
