ATLANTA, United States, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) – A two-day Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers’ meeting ended Saturday without a joint communique, as members failed to reach consensus on major geopolitical and economic issues.
Chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the meeting discussed geopolitical tensions, energy security and supply chains amid the Ukraine crisis and U.S.-Iran conflict.
Rubio said participants recognised the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Black Sea but remained divided over solutions.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu urged the G20 to strengthen its role in safeguarding global peace, easing regional tensions and addressing the root causes of conflicts.
Ma also called for greater cooperation on energy security, sustainable development and stable global supply chains.
Disagreements over Ukraine, the U.S.-Iran conflict and American tariff policies remained major obstacles. Participants raised concerns over rising fuel costs and uncertainty in international trade.
Diplomatic divisions also emerged after the United States cancelled the traditional group photograph, reportedly following objections from some Western countries to appearing alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Washington’s decision not to invite South Africa, which held the G20 presidency last year, further highlighted divisions.
U.S. President Donald Trump will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami in December and has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose attendance remains unconfirmed.
