BERLIN: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on NATO allies to accelerate defense production and increase investment to maintain credible deterrence against Russia amid growing security threats across Europe.
Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Berlin on Thursday, Wadephul said a recent attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport demonstrated the seriousness of the threat. German investigators have linked the incident to Russian intelligence services, prompting Berlin to announce sanctions.
Wadephul said Europe and NATO were facing increasing Russian aggression, including drone incidents, airspace violations, cyberattacks, sabotage, disinformation and attacks on critical infrastructure.
He said some hostile campaigns were also intended to create fear and influence public opinion ahead of regional elections in Germany.
Wadephul urged allies to remain politically united while strengthening their military capabilities through greater investment, faster production and quicker procurement.
He said Germany and other European allies would continue increasing defense spending, strengthening armed forces and assuming greater responsibility for alliance security.
Germany will also maintain strong military support for Ukraine, particularly air defense, including additional interceptor missiles before winter to protect cities and energy infrastructure.
