BERLIN, Nov. 3 – Germany has entered the winter season with critically low natural gas reserves, raising concerns about energy supplies as colder weather approaches.
Gas storage facilities were 61.05 percent full on November 2, the lowest level on record and significantly below the European Union average of 74.56 percent.
The shortfall has increased concerns over supply security as tensions linked to the Iran conflict and reduced liquefied natural gas supplies push energy prices higher.
Energy analysts warned that Germany’s reserves could fall to just 20–25 percent of capacity by the end of winter if current consumption trends continue.
Unlike Germany, several European countries have managed to replenish their reserves more successfully. Poland has benefited from long-term liquefied natural gas contracts and expanded infrastructure.
Germany’s government, however, has said there is currently no need for intervention to increase storage levels.
The situation has renewed debate over Europe’s energy security and dependence on international supplies.
