FRANKFURT, November 1 (Reuters): Germany must strengthen its gas storage system as reserves remain at record-low levels ahead of winter, the country’s gas storage industry association INES said on Sunday.
Gas storage facilities were 61.17 percent full on October 31, significantly below the government’s 80 percent target for November 1.
INES Managing Director Sebastian Heinermann called for stronger measures to ensure adequate reserves for future winters.
The association attributed the low storage levels partly to higher gas prices linked to the Iran war, which made filling storage facilities during summer economically difficult.
Germany’s energy regulator chief Klaus Mueller said the country could also rely on liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals to support supplies.
However, he warned that gas had become considerably more expensive.
The situation has raised concerns about winter energy security in Europe’s largest economy.
