ISLAMABAD, Sept 18: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday said the government would prevent any attempt to march towards Islamabad and initiate contempt of court proceedings against those violating the Islamabad High Court’s recent judgment.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Naqvi said the government had completed preparations after consultations with provincial administrations and law enforcement agencies.
He said the IHC judgment made clear that activities infringing citizens’ fundamental rights could not be allowed. The minister urged political parties to hold demonstrations in their respective cities instead of attempting to shut down the federal capital.
Naqvi said law enforcement agencies had been given clear instructions and rules of engagement, adding that they would respond if attacked during any protest.
He said organisers would be held responsible if any loss of life occurred.
The minister also referred to Friday’s deadly attack in Kohat, where 21 people, including 15 police officials, were reported killed and more than 80 injured. He urged political leaders to focus on combating terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rather than mobilising people for long marches.
The remarks followed the IHC’s detailed judgment concerning the planned September 27 protest.
