UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has identified four major tests of power that he said will shape the world’s future: war and peace, wealth and inequality, climate change and artificial intelligence.
Opening the UN General Assembly, Guterres said the world is moving toward a multipolar system but warned that it could develop through fragmentation, rising tensions and mistrust.
He said an alternative path would see multiple centres of influence coexist under international law and shared rules.
Guterres also warned that humans are increasingly handing power to machines as artificial intelligence advances, including the development of autonomous weapons.
He said the future will depend on how global leaders address the changing distribution and use of power.
The UN chief stressed the importance of international cooperation and shared frameworks as the world faces major challenges involving security, inequality, climate and rapidly advancing technology.
