BEIJING, Sept. 15 — Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Tuesday urged current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to withdraw her remarks regarding Taiwan and called on Japan to adhere to the one-China policy.
Speaking at the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, Hatoyama said Takaichi should retract her remarks or clearly reaffirm Japan’s continued respect for the one-China policy.
At a Diet meeting last November, Takaichi said the Chinese mainland’s possible “use of force on Taiwan” could constitute a situation threatening Japan’s survival. She later refused to withdraw the remarks.
Hatoyama described her statements as “extremely regrettable” and said they differed from Japan’s previous official position. He expressed support for a major change in her Taiwan-related position but acknowledged doubts about whether that would happen.
Hatoyama said he would continue efforts to promote dialogue and exchanges between Japan and China.
Themed “Build Consensus on Stability, Advance Security Governance Together,” this year’s forum has attracted participants from nearly 100 countries, regions and international organizations.
