LONDON — UK Treasury chief John Healey pledged a “new age of industrialization” during his first Labour conference speech as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Healey announced that Rolls-Royce plans to invest an additional £300 million ($398 million) in its British factories in Derby, Bristol, Glasgow and Rotherham.
He said the government would use available resources to support British businesses, jobs and innovation, while helping young people who are not in education, employment or training secure jobs with training and wages.
Healey also highlighted Labour’s record in government, warning that current economic conditions differ from those faced by New Labour in the 1990s.
He said global economic shocks and trade tensions were affecting Britain, including fuel prices and mortgage costs.
Healey stressed that fiscal discipline remained his first priority, saying it underpins the government’s commitments.
He also criticized Reform UK and its leader Nigel Farage over their economic policies and funding.
