Pakistan interim Test head coach Mike Hesson says the team needs a more balanced squad and greater variety in its bowling attack as it prepares for the third and final Test against England.
Pakistan have suffered heavy defeats in the opening two Tests and trail the three-match series 2-0. The Pakistan Cricket Board has responded with major changes, releasing seven players and bringing in seven replacements ahead of the final Test at Edgbaston, beginning September 9.
Hesson acknowledged that the mid-series changes were far from ideal but said his priority was now to build a squad capable of producing a stronger performance.
He said Pakistan needed to restore some of the qualities traditionally associated with its cricket, particularly in the bowling department.
“Pakistan is known for pace, unusual actions and mystery spin,” Hesson said, adding that the team had not been able to display those strengths during the series.
He said the new-look squad should provide greater variety and an element of unpredictability to the attack.
Hesson also acknowledged the difficult atmosphere created by the sudden changes but said the players had responded positively during preparations in Birmingham.
The coach will now focus on finding the right combination for the final Test and helping Pakistan avoid a series whitewash.
The third Test at Edgbaston starts on September 9, with England already holding an unassailable 2-0 lead.
