IAEA Chief Urges Iran to Allow Nuclear Inspections

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, on Tuesday urged Iran to provide information and access to verify its previously declared nuclear material, including 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
Addressing the UN Security Council, Grossi said the agency continues engaging with Tehran to resolve safeguards issues outstanding for more than five years.
He said the IAEA withdrew all inspectors from Iran by the end of June 2025 for safety reasons following military attacks. Inspectors have been available to return for months, but Iran has not provided the requested information and access to verify nuclear material at safeguarded facilities, including sites affected by military attacks.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant remains an exception, where inspectors are conducting verification activities.
Grossi said Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization had cooperated in arranging safeguards equipment to verify spent fuel before its transfer to a new dry storage facility, expected early next year.
He reported that IAEA inspectors spent more than 14,000 days in the field last year, conducting verification activities at over 1,400 facilities and locations outside them, and drawing safeguards conclusions for 179 states.
Grossi urged Iran to resolve outstanding safeguards questions without delay, stressing that providing access is a legal obligation.
