Iran Keeps Seven-Day Plan to Reopen Hormuz Strait

TEHRAN, October 18: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Tehran’s seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remained on the table, with conditions submitted to the United States.
Speaking to Iran’s official news agency IRNA on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s 52nd Council of Foreign Ministers session in Baghdad, Araghchi said Washington had presented its views, which Tehran was reviewing.
He said the strait could reopen on the sixth day and negotiations resume on the seventh if the United States met Iran’s conditions.
Araghchi said the conditions reflected commitments Washington had made in a peace memorandum of understanding and other negotiations.
He stressed that Iran would not bow to threats but remained ready to defend itself and pursue diplomacy.
Tensions escalated following joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28 and subsequent Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US bases and assets in the region.
A ceasefire was reached on April 8. Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, with negotiations aimed at a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief. However, they failed to make sufficient progress by the August 17 deadline.
