TEHRAN, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Sunday that two oil tankers, including a supertanker, exploded after reportedly hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement published by its official news outlet Sepah News, the IRGC navy said the vessels were using what it described as an unauthorized route through the strategic waterway.
It reported that the supertanker suffered a major explosion and caught fire, while both vessels had switched off their navigation and identification systems.
The IRGC said the incidents occurred within the preceding hours but did not identify the vessels or report casualties.
Iran has tightened restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, particularly affecting vessels it considers linked to Israel and the United States, following joint strikes on Iranian territory on February 28.
The claims were made by the IRGC and could not be independently verified.
