More than 200 Israeli filmmakers have signed a petition supporting the creators of NAZA, a documentary featuring testimony from Israeli military and intelligence personnel about operations in Gaza, Israeli media reported Monday.
Prominent signatories include directors Ari Folman, Shlomi Elkabetz, Ran Tal and Michal Aviad.
The petition came amid criticism and threats against filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor after their documentary won the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar called the film an act of “treason” and said he would seek to revoke their citizenship. However, he cannot revoke citizenship unilaterally and such action would require a formal legal process.
Produced by The Guardian and JW Films, NAZA is based on interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence insiders about surveillance, target selection and strikes in Gaza.
The filmmakers said the documentary examines institutional policies and operational practices. The Israeli army rejected its allegations and denied that artificial intelligence determines attack targets, saying human personnel make and authorize strike decisions.
Abraham and Szor previously worked on the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land.
