Italy Pushes for New European Sanctions on Settler Violence in West Bank

Rome, September 17 (QNA) – Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that his country’s government supports the European Foreign Affairs Council’s imposition of sanctions targeting violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
During a Q&A session at the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Tajani noted that Italy had already supported three rounds of sanctions against violent settlers and organizations that support their activities, saying Italy is also among those backing a fourth package currently under discussion, and continues to demand sanctions against Israeli Minister Ben Gvir for his completely unjustified behavior.
The expansion of settlements is unacceptable; no one can tolerate settler violence, he stressed, rejecting what he described as initiatives that undermine the chances of a two-state solution.
According to the Italian Foreign Minister, to effectively target the activities and sources of funding of violent settlers, measures need to be taken at the European level, because national measures are based on weak legal foundations, which expose them to the risk of limited impact and easy circumvention.
