TOKYO, October 16: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has appointed Arata Takebe as agriculture minister following Kazuo Yana’s resignation amid allegations involving political favoritism, election activities and public funds.
Yana, appointed in September, stepped down after reports that he linked road funding to political support and his campaign provided free shuttle services to supporters during elections, potentially violating election laws. He apologized for his remarks and withdrew claims that electoral authorities had approved the arrangements.
The controversies intensified opposition pressure and raised questions about Takaichi’s cabinet appointments. Japanese media and opposition figures have also criticized other officials over political fundraising and past scandals.
Takaichi’s appointments have drawn scrutiny over whether political alliances took priority over accountability. A September Asahi Shimbun poll found that 68 percent of respondents considered appointments of lawmakers implicated in a political slush fund scandal problematic.
An NHK poll released this week showed the cabinet’s approval rating falling to its lowest level since Takaichi took office, with respondents citing doubts about policy effectiveness and trust in the prime minister.
Public concerns include rising living costs. An Asahi Shimbun survey found that 76 percent considered the proposed food consumption tax cut problematic because its funding remained unclear. A Bank of Japan survey indicated that nearly 90 percent of households expected prices to rise over the next year.
The developments have intensified debate over government priorities and public confidence in its leadership.
