NEW DELHI: Kashmir’s top cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, accompanied by a delegation, met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit.
Farooq said Sunday that he called for unity among Muslims amid the suffering in Palestine and Lebanon and growing Islamophobia.
Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali also attended the meeting.
Farooq was accompanied by Kashmiri Shia leaders Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi and Imran Reza Ansari. They expressed solidarity with the people of Iran and called for an end to what they described as aggression against the country amid its war with the US.
Farooq stressed that confrontation cannot resolve issues, saying dialogue, diplomacy and engagement offer the way forward.
He also highlighted Kashmir’s centuries-old cultural and historical relationship with Iran.
During the meeting, Farooq presented Pezeshkian with a specially crafted walnut-wood model of the historic Jamia Masjid, or Grand Mosque, in Srinagar.
The meeting focused on Muslim unity and solidarity amid regional conflicts and rising Islamophobia.
