MIRPUR (AJK), Oct 27: Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and across the world observed Black Day on Tuesday to mark 79 years since Indian troops landed in Srinagar on October 27, 1947, and to protest against India’s continued control over the larger part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The day is observed annually to express the Kashmiri people’s opposition to the events of October 27, 1947, when Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar amid the dispute over the state’s accession. Kashmiris regard the military deployment and the subsequent division of the territory as contrary to their aspirations and continue to call for a peaceful settlement of the dispute in accordance with international commitments.

Our Special Jammu Kashmir state Correspondent Altaf Hamid Rao reports from Mirpur that black flags were hoisted on buildings in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, while people wore black armbands and participated in protest rallies and demonstrations. The observances were aimed at drawing international attention to the unresolved Kashmir dispute and the rights of the Kashmiri people.

Protest rallies, processions and public gatherings were held in towns across both sides of the LoC. Participants raised slogans in favour of Pakistan and Kashmir’s freedom, reiterating their opposition to India’s continued control over the territory and calling for a peaceful resolution of the long-standing dispute.

In Mirpur, a large protest rally was taken out from the District Courts premises with the participation of people from different walks of life and representatives of civil society organisations. The rally was followed by a procession and protest demonstration to mark the day and register opposition to India’s policies in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the gathering, political and social activists and representatives of various organisations called for an early and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with international law and relevant international commitments. They also urged the international community to play an effective role in addressing the dispute and safeguarding the rights of the Kashmiri people.
