The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has announced that the 10th edition of the Katara Quran Recitation Award, held under the slogan “Adorn the Quran with Your Voices,” has received 1,304 entries from around the world.
Of the total entries, approximately 570 came from 18 Arab countries, while 734 were submitted from 42 non-Arab countries. For the first time in the award’s history, entries from non-Arab countries outnumbered those from Arab countries.
Egypt, Sudan and Somalia led the Arab entries with a combined 290 submissions. The Maghreb countries followed with 150 entries, while the Levant and Iraq contributed 97. Gulf Arab countries accounted for approximately 33 entries.
A screening committee will assess all submissions and select the top 100 participants. A final jury will then shortlist 15 contestants for the qualifying rounds in Doha. One participant from each episode will advance to the final stage, where the first-, second- and third-place winners will be announced.
The competition episodes will be broadcast in a special programme in cooperation with Qatar Television during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Katara Quran Recitation Award aims to discover and encourage outstanding Quran reciters, recognise beautiful voices and promote recitation in accordance with the rules of Tajweed. It also honours talented and accomplished reciters.
The judging panel consists of six members: three specialists in Quranic readings and the rules of Tajweed, and three experts in musical modes, vocal beauty and tone.
Katara will produce a complete Quran recitation recording featuring the first-place winner at its studios.
The award offers a total prize fund of QR800,000. The first-place winner will receive QR500,000, the second-place winner QR200,000 and the third-place winner QR100,000.
The General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has been the award’s official sponsor since its launch in 2017.
