DOHA – The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara), in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Peru in Qatar, inaugurated the Peruvian Corner on Monday evening with the unveiling of a sculpture titled Prosperity and Well-being by Peruvian artist Marcelo Wong.
The ceremony was held opposite Building 28, the Poetry Council, and attended by Katara General Manager Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Peruvian Ambassador to Qatar Gonzalo Futo Bernales, several ambassadors, diplomats, cultural figures and members of the Peruvian community.
The initiative highlights cultural cooperation between Qatar and Peru and reflects Katara’s efforts to promote intercultural dialogue through art. The sculpture symbolises shared aspirations for prosperity, development and stronger friendship between the two countries.
Created in 2025, the sculpture is made of red resin and fibreglass. It measures 133 centimetres in height, 110 centimetres in width and 120 centimetres in depth. It adds a new artistic feature to Katara’s cultural landscape and offers visitors an opportunity to discover contemporary Peruvian creativity.
In his remarks, Ambassador Gonzalo Futo Bernales said the occasion celebrated not only an artistic work but also the friendship between Qatar and Peru through the universal language of art. He described the sculpture as a cultural landmark representing Peru at Katara and providing a window into the country’s culture and artistic expression.
The ambassador praised Wong’s distinctive sculptural style, characterised by curves, rounded forms, simplicity and harmony. He noted that the artist’s work brings art closer to people and into everyday life, reaching audiences across cultures and generations.
The ceremony also featured traditional Peruvian performances and an introduction to Peruvian cuisine, giving attendees an opportunity to experience the country’s rich cultural heritage.
