A landscape by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt is expected to fetch $60 million to $80 million at a Christie’s auction in New York next month.
Titled Litzlbergkeller (1915–16), the painting will headline the 20th Century Evening Sale on November 17, Christie’s announced Monday.
The work last sold at auction in May 1997 for $14.7 million at Sotheby’s in New York, setting an auction record for Klimt at the time.
Commissioned by Austrian banker Otto Primavesi, the painting depicts a brewery and inn on Lake Attersee, where Klimt spent many summers.
It features dense green foliage and shimmering water reflections, blending decorative techniques with abstract elements.
Previously owned by art dealer Serge Sabarsky, co-founder of New York’s Neue Galerie, the painting has been on long-term loan to Vienna’s Leopold Museum.
Klimt’s auction record stands at $236.4 million, set in November 2025 when Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer sold at Sotheby’s. His Birch Forest fetched $104.5 million at Christie’s in 2022.
Before the sale, Litzlbergkeller will be exhibited in Hong Kong from October 27 to 29, then at Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries from November 7.
