TRIPOLI, Nov. 01 (Xinhua) – Libya’s Presidential Council head Mohamed Menfi and eastern authorities on Saturday welcomed a UN Security Council resolution extending the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) mandate for 12 months.
In a Facebook statement, Menfi praised the mission’s mediation efforts, saying the resolution reaffirmed Libya’s sovereignty, unity and political process.
He welcomed efforts to unify state institutions and reject unilateral measures, stressing that agreements without national consensus would not ensure a lasting settlement.
Eastern authorities also welcomed the resolution, calling for a unified executive authority, unified sovereign institutions and free and fair elections based on national consensus and a sound constitutional and legal framework.
The Security Council adopted Resolution 2835 on Friday, with 13 members voting in favour and Russia and Greece abstaining.
Libya has faced political instability and rival administrations since 2011. The internationally recognised Government of National Unity operates from Tripoli, while a parallel administration based in Benghazi governs eastern and southern areas, backed by forces led by Khalifa Haftar.
