KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 19 (Xinhua): Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced his resignation Saturday in protest against the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Loke announced his decision after a meeting of the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) central executive committee, which discussed the party’s response to Najib’s pardon.
Loke, who is also secretary-general of the DAP, said other DAP ministers would remain in the coalition government.
His resignation came a day after Najib was granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Najib has been imprisoned since August 2022 following his conviction over abuse of power involving SRC International, a former unit of the state investment fund 1MDB.
The development follows continuing political debate over Najib’s sentence and house arrest arrangement.
