MIRPUR (AJK), October 2: Mirpur District Bar Association President Barrister Ali Khan has welcomed the resolution passed by the Legislative Assembly in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) seeking restoration of the territory’s statehood.
In a statement, he said the resolution reflected, in his view, the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their demand for recognition of their political identity as subjects of the Himalayan state.
He said the resolution demonstrated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were unwilling to compromise on their identity and political status. He described the measures of August 5, 2019, which revoked the territory’s special status, as having created insecurity, deprivation and uncertainty among the Kashmiri people.
Barrister Ali Khan said the demand for restoration of statehood showed that the people of Kashmir wanted to participate in decisions concerning their future and sought restoration of the territory’s historical status.
He said Jammu and Kashmir remained a disputed territory on the United Nations agenda, adding that relevant UN Security Council resolutions provided for the right of the Kashmiri people to determine their future through a free and impartial plebiscite.
He said the right to self-determination was a fundamental human, legal and moral right recognized under international law and added that the legal fraternity had always stood for the rule of law, supremacy of statehood, judicial independence and protection of human rights.
The DBA Mirpur president said the association would continue its moral and legal support for the peaceful constitutional struggle of the Kashmiri people. He called upon the United Nations, international community, legal organizations and human rights bodies to promote an early peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute and address reported human rights violations in IIOJK.
