KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 18 — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been granted a conditional pardon and will serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said Friday.
The pardon terms include a 50-million-ringgit (12.2 million U.S. dollars) fine, according to a statement.
Najib’s remaining sentence runs until Aug. 23, 2028. He has been imprisoned since August 2022 following his conviction for abuse of power related to SRC International, a former unit of state investment fund 1MDB.
Earlier in 2024, Najib received a reduced sentence, with his original 12-year prison term cut to six years. His fine was also reduced from 210 million ringgit to 50 million ringgit.
The conditional pardon allows Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence at home under the stated terms.
