NATO Officer Removed from UK Base After Romance

LONDON, Sept. 14 — A Spanish naval officer was suspended and later removed from a NATO base in Britain after his relationship with a woman he met on Tinder raised security concerns over Russian espionage, according to The Telegraph.
The officer was based at Allied Maritime Command (Marcom) at Northwood headquarters in Hertfordshire, which monitors Russian submarines and warships operating in UK waters and tracks sanctioned oil tankers linked to Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
The officer was dating Janina White, 49-year-old UK-Polish dual national born in the Soviet Union. White denied being a Russian agent and said she was unfairly targeted because of her Russian heritage.
“I definitely know I am not a Russian spy,” White told The Telegraph.
His access pass was later revoked, and the base commander barred him from entering the premises during the investigation.
Court documents cited by the newspaper said the relationship began in October 2024. White was invited to a social event at the base and received an escorted visitor pass.
The documents said NATO and Spanish security investigations were launched, resulting in the suspension of the officer’s security clearance.
