NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Thursday that the alliance would continue working with its Black Sea allies to strengthen deterrence and defence following reported drone attacks on commercial vessels.
In a post on X, Rutte said he met Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Romanian President Nicusor Dan to discuss regional security and the latest attacks on commercial shipping.
He said NATO had strengthened its eastern flank, including by expanding counter-drone capabilities. Rutte added that the alliance would adjust its deterrence and defence posture as necessary.
The discussions followed reports that two merchant ships were struck by drones off Bulgaria’s coast on Tuesday. One vessel sank, and 11 crew members were reported missing.
Bulgaria said it suspected Russia was responsible and summoned the Russian envoy.
Russia said two cargo ships carrying military cargo bound for Ukraine’s Odesa port had been hit during a sea crossing but did not identify the vessels.
