ISLAMABAD, Sept. 23: Pakistan has appointed retired Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood as the first Secretary General of the Makkah Defence Alliance between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, the Foreign Office announced Wednesday.
Mahmood will lead the alliance’s General Secretariat, which is being established in Riyadh, according to the Foreign Office.
The appointment follows the inaugural Strategic Political and Defence Committee meeting held in Istanbul on Aug. 31, where member states agreed that Pakistan would initially head the secretariat for three years.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in Makkah on Aug. 7. The agreement provides a framework for defence cooperation and collective security among the three countries.
The three states have agreed to further institutionalise cooperation and strengthen their collective defence capabilities.
The Foreign Office said the secretariat will support the alliance’s work under the agreement and serve as its central administrative structure.
The appointment marks the establishment of the alliance’s first senior administrative leadership as the three countries move to develop its institutional framework in Riyadh.
