MELBOURNE: The National Football League will make its historic Australian debut on Friday as the San Francisco 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The highly anticipated match marks the first NFL regular-season game to be played in Australia and is part of the league’s growing international programme.
The 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground has been transformed to accommodate the American football spectacle, with extensive preparations carried out ahead of the game.
The NFL has brought hundreds of staff and large quantities of equipment to Melbourne as part of an operation designed to provide Australian fans with an authentic American football experience.
The game is also a major step in the league’s strategy to expand its international audience. The 2026 season features nine international games across seven countries and four continents.
Both the 49ers and Rams have travelled with large groups of players and support staff, while additional equipment has been transported by sea and air.
The Australian debut is expected to attract significant attention from sports fans and further strengthen the NFL’s presence outside the United States.
The Melbourne game is the first of the NFL’s international fixtures this season as the league continues its global expansion.
