WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 – Nine people were killed Sunday when a Learjet 60 crashed in a residential neighbourhood near Cresthaven, Florida, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
The aircraft departed from Austin, Texas, and was heading to the Bahamas when it crashed at around 12:50 p.m. Eastern Time.
Duffy described the incident as a horrific tragedy, confirming that all nine people aboard had died.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is sending a team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) with the investigation.
Air traffic control recordings indicated that the pilot reported ice accumulating on the aircraft and moderate turbulence shortly before declaring an emergency.
The aircraft then descended approximately 8.2 kilometres in one minute.
Local media reported scattered storms in the area, with the aircraft passing through a stronger storm cell shortly before its rapid descent.
It remains unclear whether anyone on the ground was injured.
