GWADAR: Pakistan and Oman are moving towards closer maritime cooperation, with plans to establish Gwadar Port and Oman’s Sohar Port as sister ports to strengthen trade, shipping and regional connectivity.

The development followed a meeting between Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Noor Ul Haq Baloch and Oman’s Consul General Sami Abdullah Salim Al Khanjari. Discussions focused on improving port-to-port connectivity, cargo movement, investment and logistics cooperation.

The proposed arrangement could create stronger maritime links between the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Gulf markets and Central Asia. Direct connectivity between Gwadar and Sohar is expected to facilitate cargo movement, shorten transit times and support regional trade.

The officials also discussed the possibility of launching direct air connectivity between Gwadar and Oman through SalamAir, using the newly developed Gwadar International Airport. The service could support passenger travel and business activity between the two countries.

Potential Omani investment in the Gwadar Free Zone was also discussed, particularly in logistics, warehousing and fisheries, along with opportunities for joint ventures.

Pakistan and Oman further explored technical cooperation in port management, dredging, digital port operations and professional training for port personnel.

Both sides agreed to pursue the proposed cooperation through their respective ministries and work towards finalising a memorandum of understanding in the coming weeks. The Omani consul general assured continued support for advancing the initiative.
