Pakistan’s National Assembly and Senate on Wednesday approved resolutions endorsing the federal government’s imposition of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), following concerns over the province’s response to terrorism.
The federal government imposed governor’s rule and emergency on Sunday, citing what it described as the provincial government’s disengagement from counterterrorism efforts.
During parliamentary proceedings, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari defended the decision, saying the constitutional measure followed political and security developments. However, he urged the government and opposition to resume dialogue and work together against terrorism.
Bilawal described emergency rule as a temporary measure, stressing that eliminating terrorism required a collective national response.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan rejected the federal government’s move and called for counterterrorism measures under the National Action Plan. He also welcomed proposals to continue political dialogue.
The debate followed the collapse of negotiations between the government and opposition over joint efforts to address rising terrorism in KP.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq praised earlier talks for taking place in a cordial atmosphere and expressed support for forming negotiation committees again if needed.
The resolutions were passed under constitutional provisions governing emergencies. The debate highlighted continuing political differences over security policy, provincial authority and the need for cooperation against militancy.
