ISLAMABAD, November 1: Pakistan has assumed the Chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24), pledging to strengthen developing economies’ collective voice and promote a fairer, more inclusive global financial system.
Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb described the chairmanship as an important responsibility, stressing cooperation and stronger multilateral institutions to address climate challenges and financing gaps.
Outlining Pakistan’s agenda, the minister identified three priorities: placing development at the centre of global economic policymaking, strengthening developing countries’ representation in international institutions and reforming the global financial architecture.
He said macroeconomic stability should promote investment, productivity, employment and shared prosperity, enabling sustainable growth.
Pakistan will advocate equitable governance and meaningful participation in the Bretton Woods institutions, including the IMF and World Bank.
Priorities also include affordable development financing, sustainable debt solutions, stronger financial safety nets, climate resilience and greater public and private investment.
Drawing on Pakistan’s economic reform experience, Aurangzeb stressed aligning financial stability with long-term development goals.
He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s chairmanship would follow G-24 principles of consultation, consensus and collective advocacy, working with members across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
He acknowledged outgoing chair Nigeria’s leadership and pledged to build on the group’s progress.
Aurangzeb said collective leadership should be measured by tangible development outcomes and progress for developing economies.
