Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday that the government would distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to students nationwide over the next two years under the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebook Scheme.
Speaking at the scheme’s launch in Islamabad, Shehbaz said providing modern technology to young people was a collective responsibility and stressed that education should remain a government priority.
He said the devices would help students pursue further education, attend classes remotely and develop skills for future employment.
The prime minister said the Chromebooks would be awarded based on students’ ability and merit, regardless of their financial background. He added that students from religious seminaries, universities and colleges would also be eligible.
Shehbaz recalled that previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz governments had distributed 600,000 laptops over a decade. Under the new initiative, the government aims to provide 500,000 Chromebooks within two years.
He urged authorities to ensure that young people receive the resources needed for educational and professional development.
Pakistan launched its first Google Chromebook assembly line last year, a move officials said could improve access to digital devices while supporting employment, supply chains and future technology exports.
